Staithes

When it comes to seaside fishing villages, it really doesn’t get more quaint than the coastal hamlet of Staithes. Located on the Yorkshire coast, this hamlet was once the biggest fishing port in the entire North East. While there is still fishing to be enjoyed here, today Staithes has morphed into so much more and has become a tourist attraction all its own.

Explore the Old Village Feel

One of the big draws to Staithes is its architecture and the fact it feels as though you are taking a step back in time. It is dotted with lovely little cottages with steep roofs at the bottom of the cliffs that tower over them. The sea comes right up to the village offering a stunning vista as far as the eye can see. Explore the winding streets and get a feel for that old-time village yourself and enjoy the more laid-back atmosphere.

Experience North York Moors National Park

And, of course, the architecture is in constant competition with the stunning natural scenery that surrounds Staithes. It is actually located right inside the North York Moors National Park, which is dotted with sweet villages, abbeys of days past, and the moorland which is like no other landscape. In fact, the moorland is home to one of the biggest expanses of heather that you’ll find in all of the United Kingdom.

Staithes Beach – a Must-Visit Stop

If you do venture to Staithes, one thing you won’t want to miss is a visit to Staithes Beach. This small sandy beach is the perfect way to get that true seaside village feel. You can look out to the sea, or turnaround and take in the village with the rising cliffs behind it. Not only that but you’ll be able to delight in the many fishing boats that dot the area.

Now here is a really unique and special feature about the beach; beachcombers have the perfect opportunity to walk the coastline and look for fossils. That’s right, this area is referred to as Dinosaur Coast and for good reason. With that said, there are some particular areas that are known to yield fossils quite readily, including Penny Nab, Brackenberry Wyke, and Jet Wyke. The rock formations are also quite interesting since you can see bands that date back through a variety of ages.

Enjoy the Land and Sea Wildlife

For those who enjoy wildlife, Staithes is well-known for its bird watching and whale watching. For the bird watchers, there are specific trails you can follow where you will be more likely to get a glimpse of various species. If it is whale watching you want to take part in, be sure to check out the many tours you can book.

Don’t Forget About the Local Art and Culture Scene

While Staithes itself is quite small, it boasts a very robust art and culture scene. You’ll find a variety of local artists here with art courses, studios, and galleries open to the public. Then there is the Art and Heritage Festival, which takes place on an annual basis.

Staithes is truly the perfect place for those looking to get away from big-city hustle and bustle while taking in jaw-dropping scenery.
